What is a slow draft?
A slow draft — also called an async draft or "draft at your own pace" — is a fantasy sports or custom league draft where each participant picks whenever it is their turn, rather than everyone being online simultaneously. Instead of coordinating a shared Saturday afternoon for a 90-minute live draft room, you set a per-pick timer and let drafters pick on their own schedule — with no hard upper limit on how long each window can be.
Slow drafts have become the preferred format for many fantasy leagues because they eliminate the biggest pain point of live drafts: finding a time that works for every participant. When your league spans multiple time zones, has members with kids, shift work, or irregular schedules, a slow draft turns a logistical nightmare into a low-friction event that runs over a few days without anyone missing out.
Why slow drafts work better for most leagues
- No shared timeslot required. Each drafter picks when it suits them — during a lunch break, after dinner, or whenever their turn notification arrives.
- Better picks. With hours to decide instead of a 90-second countdown, drafters research their options and make more deliberate choices rather than panic-picking.
- No one gets left behind. Commissioner-configured auto-pick covers anyone who misses their timer, so the draft keeps moving automatically and you never need to hunt down a distracted drafter.
- Works across time zones. Whether your league is across the country or around the world, everyone participates on equal footing.
- Less pressure, more fun. Taking the time pressure off the draft makes the whole experience more enjoyable, especially for casual leagues.
How GetDraftedNow powers your slow draft
GetDraftedNow is built from the ground up for slow, async drafts — not bolted on as an afterthought. Every feature is designed to keep a multi-day draft moving smoothly without requiring anyone to babysit it.
- Configurable pick timers. Set each pick window from 30 seconds for live play up to however long your league needs for fully async drafts. The timer starts the moment the previous pick is confirmed.
- Email turn notifications (SMS on Premium). Every drafter can get an alert the moment their clock starts. No one has to check the board constantly.
- Auto-pick on expiry. The commissioner configures what happens when a timer runs out — commissioner ranked list, random pick, commissioner pick, or skip (all free league settings). Per-drafter ranked auto-pick queues are a Premium option. The draft never stalls.
- Time bank reserve (Premium). Give each drafter a pool of bonus seconds they can spend across tough picks. They get extra thinking time on the picks that matter without delaying every other round.
- Magic-link invites. Drafters join via a unique link — no account or password required. Share the link by text, email, or DM and your league is ready.
- Live draft board. Even though the draft is async, the board updates in real time. Drafters and spectators can follow along at any time.
- Commissioner controls. Pause and resume the draft, undo picks, override on behalf of a drafter, or reset the draft entirely — all from the commissioner dashboard.
Running a slow fantasy football draft step by step
- Create your league. Sign up for free, start a new league, and choose your draft format — snake is the most common for fantasy football; linear and auction are free too. Advanced formats like third-round reversal and random last round are Premium.
- Add your player pool. Paste in your custom player list or use a pre-built template. Add categories (QB, RB, WR, TE, K, DEF) for organized drafting.
- Set the pick timer. For a classic slow draft, 12–24 hours per pick is the most popular setting. Drafters have a full day to make each selection.
- Invite your drafters. Send each person their unique magic link. They click it, enter a display name, and they are in — no sign-up required.
- Start the draft. Hit Start when you are ready. The first drafter on the clock gets notified immediately. The draft runs itself from there.
- Monitor from the board. Watch the live board as picks come in. GetDraftedNow handles all timers, auto-picks, and notifications automatically.
How long should a slow draft timer be?
A slow draft timer should match how often your league realistically checks in. Shorter windows keep the draft lively; longer windows are better for managers in different time zones or leagues that want research time between picks. Auto-pick (including a commissioner ranked list) protects the draft from stalling; per-drafter ranked auto-pick queues are a Premium option.
| Pick timer | Best for | Typical pace |
|---|
| 60–120 seconds | Live draft night when everyone is online together. | A 10-team, 15-round draft usually finishes in one evening. |
| 4–8 hours | Fast async leagues where most people check during the day. | Often completes over a long weekend. |
| 12–24 hours | Classic slow drafts across work schedules and time zones. | A 10-team, 15-round draft commonly takes 7–10 days. |
| 48+ hours | Deep dynasty, auction, or international groups. | Best when the group values deliberation over speed. |
Slow draft formats available
GetDraftedNow supports five draft formats for slow and async drafts:
- Snake — the pick order reverses every round. Standard for most fantasy football leagues.
- Linear — the same order repeats every round. Common for keeper leagues and auction-style setups.
- Third-round reversal (Premium) — snake format where only round 3 is reversed, a popular best-ball variant.
- Random last round (Premium) — snake with a randomly shuffled final round for added unpredictability.
- Auction — each drafter bids with a set budget, even in a fully async multi-day format.
Slow draft FAQ
Do drafters need accounts? No. The commissioner sends magic links and drafters pick from those links without creating accounts.
What if someone misses their timer? The draft follows the commissioner's auto-pick rule: commissioner ranked list, random pick, commissioner pick, or skip. Per-drafter ranked auto-pick queues are a separate Premium option.
Can a slow draft still feel live? Yes. The board updates in real time, and turn notifications keep everyone aware even when the draft spans several days.
